Do you think children play just for fun? To pass the time? This may be true, but they’re not the only reasons. Through playing, children gain the vast majority of skills. They explore their environment by playing. They should get positive feedback to reinforce those skills. This makes them feel safe and confident in their development.
How your child feels in their room is very important to this end. This kids room idea is an extension of the home, but it’s also where the child spends most of their time. It’s a place where they should feel good, a place that reflects their personality.
One fun way to combine playing, skill development, and taking your child on a meaningful journey to self-perception and self-awareness is by helping them design their room. Without further ado, here are 5 cool ideas to make that happen.
1. Be Inspired
Approach the task of designing or remodeling your kids room by seeking inspiration together. You can get ideas from Pinterest, Instagram, or interior design blogs to help you create a welcoming space for your loved one to live in. Include them in the process and always ask for their opinion. It’ll be more fun than doing it all yourself anyway.
Once you’ve found inspiration, establish what furniture and décor you already have that you could repurpose. For example, you could give some pieces a new lease on life by reupholstering them. Then, decide what pieces you’ll need to buy.
At this point, it would be very helpful to choose a theme. Our second tip goes into that in detail, but every theme has one of two underlying concepts – simplistic or busy. Busy room designs are typified by patterns thrown together and a lot of clashing. They are bright and colorful. These rooms combine graphic patterns and vivid colors to create a tailored, yet playful look. For example, you could have a basic trundle bed with a quirky, fun twist. Reupholster it in a loud color while keeping the other furniture in the kids room a glossy white or matte.
If your child needs a place to relax, minimalistic designs will make the kids room a space that fulfills that need. They can chill out in a chic black and white bedroom with classic furniture, customized lights and rugs, and neutral wallpaper.
2. Choose a theme for your kids room
There are literally thousands of themes out there, so have a quick look and ask your child to choose one. Traditionally, they are divided into boys and girls’ themes, ex. sports vs. fairy princess. We do not encourage this division. Simply let the child choose a theme and go with that. This section lists the most popular ones.
Animal Theme in your kids room
Most children love dogs. This theme might involve dog prints, pictures of dogs on walls, and a canine-inspired rug among other things. Brown, beige, gray, and green dominate. The kids room eases the transition from childhood to adolescence, which is another advantage. You could add fabric dog busts too. This theme can also be used in celebrating your kids birthday.
Safari
You might opt for an African-inspired design with orange and white striped carpets, a red dresser, a blue closet, and a custom bed (or bunk bed if you have two children). Reinforce the theme with zebra-printed wallpaper and subdued lighting.
Western
Cowboy-themed wallpaper and quirky cowboy hat-shaped lamps are the salient features of this theme.
Nautical
Deep blue colours, pictures of ships, anchor-print wallpaper or carpet, and other elements of your choice would stimulate the imagination of a child infatuated with the sea.
Fortress
The fortress theme is unbeatable for an amazing bedroom that will double as a play space. This theme lends itself to tasteful decoration and creates the sleepover site we wish we had as kids. It can include any fortress-related design elements against the backdrop of the cactus-print wallpaper. The dominating colour scheme here is neutral. Thick curtains belong to the theme and will be conducive to sleeping in.
On a final note, current interior design blogs tell us princess themes are passé, but that shouldn’t deter you if it’s what your child wants.
3. Opt for Unconventional Storage Solutions
Clutter is innate to kids room. Clothes, games, and toys will inevitably take up space. This is why you should make elegant storage solutions a priority. You could place a trunk near the bed (especially appropriate for the nautical theme) or an acrylic bin. When filled with colourful blocks or toys, these storage solutions make for exciting visuals. The games or toys easily become décor elements with their fun shapes and bright colours. You never know – cleaning up might get fun too!
To put away rarely used accessories and out of season clothes, we recommend using a tall dresser placed in the closet. They’re out of sight when the closet door is closed, but still, put away neatly. Instead of a traditional bookshelf, opt for strategically placed shelves throughout the space.
4. Invest In Timeless Furniture
Elegant, timeless, multipurpose furniture is the best investment ever. For example, mural wallpaper can easily pass off as flowers, leaves, or ivy climbing up the walls. A daybed for a young child is convenient for feedings. As he or she grows up, it can be converted to a big bed with a trundle.
5. Add Unique Design Elements in your kids room
Now that you’ve chosen a theme and picked the furniture, it’s time for the final touches. To be age-appropriate, not every kids room needs to be visibly playful. Sometimes, it’s a better idea to keep the child-friendly elements toned down. A room bursting with warmth will mature gracefully, especially if augmented by a distinct, flexible colour scheme. An example of this is creamy tones, blush pinks, and warm beige accents.
If you want the room to be cheerful, go for fun fabrics, bright colours, and yellow gingham wallpaper. It will feel like a playground or a clubhouse. Customized neon lights will add the final touch.
What your child likes should be part of their immediate environment and they should be active in making that happen. With your help, of course!
